The WIU Office of Public Safety and the Macomb Police Department are offering basic safety tips to students and residents that may be leaving town for the holidays.

Officials from OPS and Macomb PD say simple precautions like locking houses, dorm rooms, and windows, as well as never leaving bags or purses unattended, can be extremely effective in preventing thefts and break-ins.

Vehicle owners are also encouraged to keep vehicles locked at all times, and never leave valuable items in plain sight inside the vehicle.

It’s recommended that off-campus residents leave a porch light on and ask someone to check on the property if traveling home for Thanksgiving break.
