The Illinois General Assembly passed the smoke free campus act which requires public colleges and universities in the state of Illinois to become smoke free.
WIU student Maddie Heinzer says, “I think its a step in the right direction to try to promote a healthier campus for not only our students and our faculty but for a lot of the guests here, as well.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says cigarette smoking kills more than 400,000 people each year. More than 41,000 of those deaths are from exposure to second hand smoke.
Smoking is prohibited on all campus property indoors and outdoors. It is allowed in some areas near campus, along city roads.
