WIU officials say student connected to reported racist sign

MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3) — Western Illinois University officials said a student has been linked to the reported racist sign that was found in a computer lab on campus last week.

In an email to the WIU community on Tuesday afternoon, Interim President Martin Abraham said the individual was identified based on evidence gathered by University Technology (uTech) and the Office of Public Safety (OPS).

The email said the student was referred to Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR), the disciplinary body for the student population, for behavior/conduct. The SRR will take necessary measures upon reviewing the individual.

“In addition to expressing my appreciation to uTech and OPS personnel, I especially want to thank the student who brought this forward,” Abraham said in the email. “As I stated in a letter that day following the discovery of the sign, hate has no home at WIU.”

NEWS3 reached out to University Relations for more information on the student, they declined to release the identity of the student.
