Police: Son arrested after killing father in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ill. (NEWS3) — A man was arrested after police said he admitted to killing his father in Hancock County Monday.

Sheriff Scott Bentzinger said deputies received a call Monday morning around 8:30 a.m. to respond to a residence in the Village of Pontoosuc, after someone reported to police their neighbor asked them to call the sheriff’s department because he had killed his father.

Bentzinger said deputies arrived and arrested 36-year-old Andrew De Haven without incident after he admitted to killing his father, 67-year-old Michael De Haven.

Police searched the house and found Michael’s body, according to the sheriff.

Andrew was taken to the Hancock County Jail Monday. Authorities have yet to formally announce any charges.

Police did not say what the motive was in the case or how the father was killed.

The Village of Pontoosuc is about 50 minutes from Macomb. Its population is around 150 people.
