MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3)– McAlister’s Deli is stepping up to help make sure students have a lunch while schools are closed due to the coronavirus.
McAlister’s Deli, on East Jackson St. in Macomb, posted on Facebook the location is serving free lunches to area children. This comes after Governor J.B. Pritzker announced Friday schools throughout Illinois will be closed starting Tuesday through March 30. Macomb School District sent a note to parents Friday afternoon saying school will be closed Monday through March 30.
Assistant manager of McAlister’s Deli in Macomb, Brianna Haskins, said it is important to help families during this difficult time.
“We know that lots of times, the only meal kids will get during a day is the school lunch,” Haskins said. “With schools being closed unexpectedly, there’s a lot of families out there that end up struggling because they can’t afford to get their kids fed.”
The free meal includes a turkey and cheese sandwich, chips, applesauce and a cookie. Parents can stop by Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to pick up the sack lunch. Children aged 12 and under can also eat for free every Monday evening from 5 p.m. until close when their parents dine in.
