Local food pantries help those in need during pandemic

MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3) — With schools across the country closed and many families struggling to get by amid the COVID-19 outbreak, local food pantries in the Macomb area are extending a helping hand to the community.

Listed below are several locations offering support to families in need during these uncertain times. Times and dates for food pickup can vary for each location.

Western Illinois Regional Council (WIRC)

223 S. Randolph St. – 309-837-2997

Curb-side pickup available Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (excluding holidays).

Best practice to bring proof of income, social security numbers (documentation not required) and date of birth for all family members (eligible every 30 days).

Emergency Cupboard outside of First Christian Church

120 N. McArthur St.

Nonperishable food items available 24 hours. You can help yourself to whatever you need by opening the cupboard that is located at the South side of the church at the bottom of the stairs.

C.A.R.E. Food Pantry

103 Market St., Colchester (between the Memorial Clinic and Spotlight Event Center)

Eligible residents of McDonough County can receive monthly food support. Must complete a form, show proof of residency, and sign each time. Those who have traveled, have cold or flu-like symptoms or have been near someone who has traveled or is ill will not be permitted into the building for safety purposes. Send someone to get food for you!

Hours: Thursdays 4-6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-noon.

The Crossing Food Pantry

The Crossing Church – 1600 W. Jackson St. 309-836-7870

Pantry times will be determined by a month-to-month basis. Call for more information.

WIU Food Pantry

Located at the former ticket booth near Q-lot, adjoining Hanson Field.

Food support is offered to students, faculty and staff with valid WIU ID. No proof of income is needed. Hours will be announced on a weekly basis on Facebook and Instagram. Can also email wiufoodpantry@wiu.edu.

Nonperishable food items are available 24 hours in the Little Free Library on the west side of the building.
