MACOMB, IL (NEWS3) — With many struggling through financial burdens of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to know there are still local organizations that can help.

The Western Illinois Regional Council-Community Action Agency (WIRC-CAA) wants to reassure the public that the food pantry is still open to all individuals, but in a different way than normal.

For the foreseeable future, the food pantry is open for curbside pickup only.

Clients should call (309) 837-2997 when they arrive to pick up their food. Staff will ask for the client’s name and then bring the sacked food out to the table. During this process, clients should stay in their vehicle or keep a distance of six feet away from the table.

Curbside pickup is available Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the main entrance of the WIRC building in Macomb.

The WIRC also recommends applying for food assistance if you are someone who has been laid off or had your working hours significantly reduced due to this pandemic.

For more information about WIRC and their other social service programs, visit wirpc.org.

The Western Illinois University Food Pantry also wants to continue helping faculty, staff and students during this pressing time.

WIU officials said the pantry will remain open for the summer. Hours will vary from week to week, and will be announced on the pantry’s Facebook page.

Currently, the pantry is open every Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

During distribution, measures include:

  • Volunteers will provide hand sanitizer to all patrons
  • Only one patron at a time will be able to shop in the pantry until further notice
  • All other patrons must wait outside and practice social distancing
  • Based on need and availability, limits may be placed on certain pantry items
  • All patrons are encouraged to wash their hands prior to visiting the pantry

Food is available to students, faculty and staff with a valid WIU ID. No proof of income is needed in order to receive food items.

The WIU Food Pantry is located in the former ticket booth near Q-Lot, adjoining Hanson Field.
