Arrest warrant issued for alleged shooting suspect in WIU shooting

MACOMB, Ill. (NEWS3) — Police now have an arrest warrant out for the man believed to have shot another student at Western Illinois University Tuesday.

Authorities announced during a press conference, WIU freshman Kavion Poplous, 18, of Chicago, is wanted on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The charges come after Poplous is accused of shooting his roommate following an argument in their Thompson Hall dorm room just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to WIU spokesperson Darcie Shinberger.

Poplous is still on the run, but police have not released any information related to a vehicle or clothing description. The alleged shooting suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Police believe the shooting is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.

Officials said the male victim is out of surgery, but there is no word on his condition. He was rushed to McDonough District Hospital following the shooting, then taken to another area hospital.

“Our thoughts are with our student who remains hospitalized, and we pray for a speedy recovery,” WIU Interim President Martin Abraham said.

WIU sent out an alarm just before 11:30 a.m. to the campus community saying a student had been shot in Thompson Hall.

Students in Thompson Hall were evacuated shortly after the incident when a smoke alarm went off, but it’s unclear what made the alarm go off. Students have since returned to their dorm rooms. WIU Office of Public Safety is staged near the entrance to Thompson to only allow residents in.

All buildings including residence halls at Western are on lockdown until further notice. Students are encouraged to remain in the dorm halls.

WIU, Macomb School District and Spoon River College canceled in-person and online classes Wednesday due to the ongoing situation.

First responders from Macomb Police Department, McDonough County Sheriff’s Department, Macomb Fire Department, Warren County Sheriff, Monmouth Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Police among other agencies responded to the scene.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to call 911 immediately or contact Macomb Area Crimestoppers at 800-222-TIPS or 309-836-2222.

Thompson Hall is located in the northwest corner of campus near the intersection of University Dr. and Western Ave.
