Police: Shooter injures one at WIU

MACOMB (NEWS3) — One person is injured after a shooting inside a residence hall at Western Illinois University.

WIU officials sent an alert to the campus community around 11:30 p.m. saying a shooter was reported in Thompson Hall, but not to assume this as the current location.

WIU spokesperson Darcie Shinberger said the shooting happened around 10:40 p.m. after a dispute between two roommates. One male was shot and injured and later transported to McDonough District Hospital. She did not release the extent of his injuries.

Shinberger said the suspect is still at large but believes there is no threat to the campus community. She said police will release more information soon about the suspect.

First responders from Macomb Police Department, McDonough County Sheriff, Macomb Fire Department, Warren County Sheriff, Monmouth Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff and Illinois State Police are on scene outside of Thompson Hall.

Shinberger said it’s undecided if classes will be held Wednesday. Currently, students are not allowed inside Thompson Hall.

Thompson Hall is located in the northwest corner of campus near the intersection of University Dr. and Western Ave.

Students told NEWS3 they evacuated after the fire alarm sounded and then police instructed them to Western Hall.

Anyone stopped by police is asked to follow all instructions and hold hands in plane view.
