MACOMB, Ill (NEWS3) – The 2020-2021 school year is unlike any other at Western Illinois University, among schools all over the country.

On Fridays on campus, the WIU Marching Leathernecks and Jazz Band are performing live pop-up concerts to fill the void.

During a typical school year, WIU bands perform at parades, indoor concerts, recruiting events
and athletic events. Pop-up concerts are something that have not been done before, but the need
for school-spirit is higher than ever.

“Campus is good, it’s alive,” Matt Thomas, Director of the Marching Leathernecks and
Associate Director of Bands, said. “It’s good to have people on campus, but the feeling just isn’t
the same like a normal year, so we started these pop-up concerts on Friday afternoons and
honestly it’s been great.”

WIU jazz combos perform at 1 p.m. on Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, outside Browne Hall. The WIU Marching Leathernecks perform at 4:30 p.m., Oct. 9, at Sherman Hall.
